How The PortableConnect ® from ROM Technologies ™ Works
The ROMTech ® PortableConnect rehab device is fitted with a touchscreen interface screen that lets patients access many different types of data and communicate directly with their doctors or physical therapists if and when needed.
The screen, for example, will show the rehab exercises prescribed by the patient’s care team, all the real-time data recorded by the device while patients perform their workout sessions, and more.
While using PortableConnect ®, patients are required to wear the ROMTech ® AccuAngle ® on the side of their knee. The patented AccuAngle ® technology collects all the extension and flexion data during each rehab session and stores it in the device’s memory.
Both patients and their clinicians can access this data through the ROMTech ® PortableConnect ® App. All recovery records of a particular patient are stored in the patient portal of the app, and the therapist can gain access to the portal with the patient’s permission.
This means that a patient’s care team can remotely monitor the recovery process 24/7 and prescribe necessary adjustments to the rehab routine if necessary. All communication and interaction between the patient and their therapist can be performed directly via the device (no need for phone calls or e-mail, let alone regular visits to the therapy center).
PortableConnect ® Workouts for Patients
As with other stationary equipment, patients perform the pedaling exercise while sitting on the PortableConnect ®. They gently stretch and bend their knees for a certain amount of time (as advised by the therapist) during each rehab session.
Typically, therapists or clinicians who prescribe ROMTech ® devices for post-op recovery maintain that patients can efficiently perform 3-5 daily rehab sessions on the PortableConnect ®.
The PortableConnect ® is also equipped with Adaptive Pedal Technology that automatically adjusts the pedal radius and range of motion, based on a patient’s needs that day. This means patients aren’t at risk for overexerting themselves.
In addition, the device features four Pedaling Therapy Modes: Active, Passive, Active-Assisted, and Resistance. The optimal exercise mode is displayed on the screen, based on the patient’s needs.
The patient’s therapist will advise on the best protocol for their patient at every stage of their recovery. While performing their therapy sessions, the patients experience gentle therapeutic motions that effectively manage pain during the entire recovery process and lead to a faster recovery.
It is important to know that during a patient’s recovery, the ROM Technologies ™ PortableConnect ® therapy sessions can be performed independently or coupled with other rehab protocols as advised by the therapy care team. In most cases, however, 3-5 sessions on the PortableConnect ® will suffice for the recovery.
How PortableConnect ® Helps with Surgery Recovery
According to doctors, physical therapy as part of post-op recovery must begin as early as possible. This leads to faster recovery, a better quality of life, and results in better patient outcomes, particularly in terms of pain management.
However, most patients find it challenging to start immediately on their prescribed standard rehab care routine because of the pain involved. However, as mentioned, this reluctance on the part of the patients can prolong their recovery and lead to increased pain.
With the PortableConnect ®, patients can start with the therapy routine immediately following the surgery—from day one. This is because the gentle therapeutic motion facilitated by the device and its automatic adjustment pedal technology ensure that patients experience little pain while performing their therapy session.
In fact, according to patients’ testimonials, their overall pain is reduced by performing the workouts. This means that every time they feel any sharp spike in pain, the patients can simply get on the device for another therapy session that helps soothe the pain.
Therefore, patients who use the ROMTech ® for post-op recovery rely much less on pain medication than those who undergo standard post-op rehab care.
Active Engagement in Recovery
Many patients also share how the device has encouraged them to stay on top of their prescribed rehab routine and complete their rehabilitation faster than with standard rehab care. With the PortableConnect ®, patients often feel actively engaged in their recoveries. Because the patients can see for themselves, via the recorded data, the progress they are making daily, they are encouraged to stay up-to-date with their rehab therapy.
